Pinot Noir from the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, made by a domaine better known for its whites.

Producer: Founded in 1970 by Marc Colin and his wife Michèle, the domaine spans 15 hectares across 26 appellations in St-Aubin, Chassagne, Puligny and Santenay, most inherited from earlier generations of the Colin and Ponavoy families. Since the 2016 vintage Damien and his sister Caroline have been the proprietors. The reds here are often overlooked but very fine.

Terroir: Santenay closes the Côte de Beaune between Chassagne-Montrachet and the Maranges, on grey limestone at altitude and oolitic limestone over marl lower down, 300–500m. Pinot Noir expresses itself generously in 2023, with real ageing potential.

Tasting: Bright ruby. Strawberry, cherry and violet in youth, moving to undergrowth and dried tobacco with age, with firm tannins and a refined finish. Serve 58–60°F; decant 30 minutes. Drink now through roughly 2031.

Pairs with: Roast duck, coq au vin, mushroom tart, Époisses, charcuterie.
