Domaine Marc Colin Bourgogne Chardonnay
Bourgogne Blanc · Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Village-quality fruit at a Bourgogne price. This is the entry point to one of Saint-Aubin's benchmark white Burgundy estates, and it punches well above its label. The wine is sourced from vines in the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, drawn from two plots in Chassagne and two in Puligny. In other words, the same hallowed Côte de Beaune dirt behind bottles that cost many times more.
Marc Colin established his own domaine in 1970 in the heart of Saint-Aubin with vines he and his wife Michèle inherited. Today Joseph, Caroline, and Damien, the children of Marc and Michèle, own and run the estate, where sustainable and organic farming, older vines, and clay-limestone soils all contribute to the quality in the glass. The style is traditional but not timid, and the whites strive for optimum freshness with no heavy, ungainly wood. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts, aging happens in French oak with only a modest proportion new, and the wines rest on their lees without bâtonnage, preserving tension and clarity while malolactic fermentation proceeds naturally.
Tasting NotesAromatically expansive, with notes of nashi pear, white flowers and white peach, followed by a medium-bodied, racy and incisive palate that unites flesh with cut. Pale and pure in color, lean, fresh and chiseled on the nose, with a real concentration of fresh apple that makes it an extremely refreshing Chardonnay to drink on its own.
